Simply Adorable a big surprise

It certainly was an upset result but nobody could deny the joy and happiness on the faces of trainer Vaughn Sigley and owner Alan MacAlister following the win of Simply Adorable in the Listed Carlton Draught Pinjarra Cup last Sunday

While all the pre-race talk centred on Almohad and Guyno and who could beat the Lou Luciani pair there was little thought or discussion centred on the prospects of a 5-year-old mare who had won one race in 33 starts

But that didn’t worry Sigley and MacAlister who went about their business in their usual quiet and understated manner and who were too busy preparing their horse for a major race than worry about media profile.

For Sigley, a former credentialed jockey, it was the best and biggest win of his training career and testament to his growing skills as a horseman.

And for Alan MacAlister it was just rewards for an owner who is making such a valuable contribution to the local racing industry and who has proven to be a bedrock of support to Sigley.

It also goes some way to compensate for the loss of promising Irish stayer My Atacanta who was forced into premature retirement through persistent leg injuries.

Just as he was on the cusp of a promising staying career he was cruelly cut down in his prime.

What added to this remarkable story was the ride of veteran jockey Danny Miller who displayed all his skill and experience to get Simply Adorable across the line.

The man is racing royalty who never appears to be fussed or fazed by the attention.

I’m sure he would have treated it as another ride and a job he had to do, but on quiet reflection he will realise his importance to another historic chapter of Pinjarra Cup history.

Congratulations to Lou Luciani who was the first to congratulate Sigley on his win.

He would have been feeling a sense of hollowness despite the brave efforts of his two charges but was still able to display professionalism and humility to a fellow racing comrade.

Other highlights on what was a magnificent afternoon of racing included the win of the Lindsey Smith-trained One Cool Queen in the opening event.

She was well supported pre-race and came flooding home late to record an impressive maiden victory.

Zebook looked for all money to finally record a deserving victory but knocked up to be placed third.

The best bet of the day Whipsaw proved too good and won like a good thing in the BEM Contract Management Maiden to give Mark Reed another promising addition to his stable.

It was only fitting that former Pinjarra Club President Keith Jeffreys gets a win on Cup day with Nomunnofun in the Programmed Property Services Handicap.

The four-year-old always runs a consistent race and upset the odds-on favourite Emteevee.

Guess Girl made it back-to-back wins in the Heytesbury Handicap to give Christine and Jerry Stelmach a welcome change of luck.

Field Commotion continued his good form in the Boddington Earthmoving Handicap as did Brandy Lane in the last: the Western Greenery Handicap.

A great Pinjarra Cup, a great afternoon of racing and a great advertisement for one of the leading provincial clubs in Australia.
