Final Race Meeting at Pinjarra
The Sky Racing Provincial Challenge Series Heat (1400m) will headline the final meeting of the 2009/10 Pinjarra racing season on Thursday, 6 May.
A strong field of nine runners to go around including last-start winner Demelza’s Wings, French President, Nomunnofun and Striking Viking who is make a return to the track for the first time in over two years.
The six-year-old Volksraad gelding, now in the care of Albany trainer Mark Nelson, hasn’t been seen since a last-start third to Scenic Bullet at Belmont Park in May 2008 and that followed a strong win over the Adam Durrant-trained Great Destiny at Ascot over 1800 metres.
It’s a tough ask to expect success first up for a horse that hasn’t raced in over two years but clearly Nelson must think he is ready and capable of recapturing some of his earlier promising form.
Demelza’s Wings is clearly a danger in the race and if she can reproduce her last-start effort when pushing through strongly for a narrow win over Ten Degrees she will be hard to beat.
Stablemate Do Ya Best put in a nice effort to be placed second to Costly Call when resuming a fortnight ago.
He worked to the line strongly and has a solid second-up record to consider.
Tim Crosby has done a fantastic job with French President who has been more than competitive this campaign with two wins and a creditable last-start second placing to Gold Commodity.
He sprouted wings over the concluding stages to make a late dash for victory and will appreciate the step up to 1400 metres.
Nomunnofun will never run you a bad race and has only been out of the money twice this preparation.
The Keith Jeffreys-trained four-year-old will have the run of the race from gate one and is more than capable of scoring the fourth win of his career.
Punters should keep a watch on the Jim Taylor-trained Century Flyer in the opening event of the programme: the Elite Lamb Maiden (1300m).
It’s taken more than 18 months to get the three-year-old Flying Spur colt to the racetrack and he performed creditably with a first-up third to Battle Hymn.
He will get the run of the race from barrier one and it’s not too often Jim Taylor travels to the provincials.
And Megablitz should continue his recent good form with a win in the Margaret River Fresh Handicap (1600m).
